Mat Monsters wrestling is built upon three principles: fundamentals, fitness, and fun. We strive to build champions, but more importantly, we believe that wrestling teaches lessons that are equally -- if not more -- important off-the-mat than on-the mat. Wrestling teaches hard work and disciple; teamwork; confidence, resilience, and respect: respect for your parents, respect for your coaches, respect for your teammates, respect for your opponent, and respect for yourself.

The only equipment you will need are wrestling shoes, wrestling head gear, and possibly a mouthguard if you have braces or value your pearly whites. The wrestling season = train, compete, repeat.  All parents are required to volunteer at one-half of the NVWF wrestling meets as table scorers in order to support the league. Don't worry there is training and it also enables them to both be an active part of the program and is a great way to learn more about the rules of wrestling!

Mat Monster practices are held in the Mt. Vernon H.S. wrestling room, and start November 2nd. Our program is divided into two age groups: "Mini" Monsters (approximately ages 10 and under) practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:40-6:40, with an emphasis on wrestling basics, physical activity, and games; "Mega" Monsters (ages 11+) practice from 6:45-8:15 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with an increased emphasis on competition and conditioning (but while still having fun).

Both "Mini" and "Mega" Monsters compete in the NVWF season, which is comprised of 6-8 meets December-February, culminating in an end-of-season championship tournament. Wrestlers are matched according to age, weight, and experience/skill level, so first-year wrestlers do not have to face four-time Iowa state champions, and THERE IS NO WEIGHT CUTTING in NVWF. Meets are held at high schools across Northern Virginia, usually within a 20-75 minute drive from Mt Vernon H.S.

Registration for the 2023-2024 season begins Monday, October 9th through Friday, November 10th, 2023
